A Sequatchie County constable who had been charged with child rape on Thursday pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of child endangerment.

David Eugene Broome earlier was indicted by the Sequatchie County Grand Jury on the child rape charge.

Steven Strain, assistant district attorney for the 12th Judicial District, said the decision to reduce charges and avoid a jury trial was made by the family currently raising the child, according to the Dunlap News.

“The family of the victim did not want to put her through a contested trial,” the assistant DA said. “She is not with her biological family any longer. She is in placement, doing very well for herself.”

He added, “I met with the family who is raising the child now and discussed their options. They did not want to put her through a trial. They were well pleased with the outcome.”

Broome can petition to have the charge expunged and he will not be on the sex offender registry.

Broome continues to serve as a constable and he has picked up papers to seek re-election.
