Police have charged a Chattanooga man with burglarizing a wrecker service after he left his ID at the crime scene.

Shawn Crandell, 34, of 616 Lupton Dr., was charged with burglary, three counts of burglary of an auto, theft of property, theft over $1,000, vandalism, possession of meth and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police responded last Nov. 18 to R&D Wrecker Service on Hixson Pike. The owner said an unknown white male wearing a Navy hoodie, jeans and black shoes was seen on security cameras going through numerous vehicles.

He took some $2,350 in items.

Employees located a state-issued ID belonging to Shawn Crandell.

Police said poor video resolution prevented any positive comparison with Crandell.

The owner of the wrecker service and his son later used Facebook to locate the father of Crandell at 616 Lupton Dr. They went to the residence and saw a white SUV in the drive that matched the vehicle seen in the security video.

They spoke with the father, who returned two of the stolen items, a Kindle Smart Table and keys to a Jaguar F-Pace.

The father said his son had been staying with him, but had left to live with his girlfriend. Police eventually took Crandell into custody.
