Matthew Higgins has been presented the annual Martin-Langley Service Award.

It is presented to a CARTA employee who exemplifies the utmost in public service.

Mr. Higgins was presented a glass trophy during the CARTA board meeting.

Also during the session, Jilll Hindman said she is concerned that a number of Care-A-Van drivers are leaving for other work.

Several have moved to BlueCross for its shuttle system.

Officials said they are aware of the problem and said it is happening because of better pay and working conditions.

The board again heard from leaders of the Amalgamated Transit Union. They were initially not allowed to address the board, but have been doing so after filing a federal lawsuit.

The bus union leaders said their concerns have still not been addressed by CARTA management.

Kathy Smith, president, said the group wants to work cooperatively to bring solutions for all.

Billy Nye, vice president, said there has still not been a response on a safety plan for CARTA drivers. He said one has never been put into place.

"I can't carry a Glock at my side," Lakecha Strickland said.

She added, "We are not here for a negative thing. But nothing has been resolved as far as our issues go."
