Nashville Chancellor Dismisses Lawsuit Over Robin Smith Candidacy

Tuesday, July 17, 2018

A Nashville chancellor has dismissed a lawsuit brought by the Tennessee Democratic Party seeking to keep former state GOP Chairman Robin Smith off the Republican ballot in the Aug. 2 primary election.

Ms. Smith was the only candidate after Rep. Gerald McCormick surprisingly dropped out at a late hour.

The Democratic Party could still file the lawsuit in Hamilton County or appeal to the Tennessee Court of Appeals.

Chris Clem, a Republican member of the Hamilton County Election Commission, said the lawsuit could cost county taxpayers as much as $20,000.

He said Democrats should pay for the court case, instead of taxpayers.
